Pesos have been used in Colombia since 1810 when they replaced the use of the real. The central bank in Colombia is the Banco de la República, which issues the peso.

Since 2001 the Colombian Senate has been discussing the possibility of introducing a new peso worth 1000 old pesos, in a bid to streamline the amount of zeros currently recited on coins and banknotes.
