Common questions about buying foreign currency in New Zealand
Can you buy foreign currency at a bank in New Zealand?
No. New Zealand’s major banks do not sell foreign cash directly in branches. ANZ stopped on 14 November 2020, ASB on 2 July 2021 and Westpac on 30 January 2026. BNZ directs customers to Travelex instead. Westpac customers can use code WESTPACFX, while BNZ customers can use TRAVELEXBNZ. Enter the code at checkout when ordering online. In-store customers must show proof that they bank with the relevant partner.
How long does it take to buy foreign currency online?
Travelex Money Card click & collect orders are usually ready for store collection within one to two business days. Post Outlet cash orders can arrive in as little as three business days if you order before 2.30 pm. Same Day Click and Collect is available at Christchurch Airport for USD, EUR, JPY, GBP and the Travelex Money Card when you order by 11 am and pay by card.
How do I avoid foreign transaction fees when I travel?
Load a supported currency onto a Travelex Money Card before you travel, then pay in that local currency. You lock in the rate for that load. Later top-ups use the rate available at the time of each transaction. If a terminal offers dynamic currency conversion to NZD, decline it and choose the local currency. A currency conversion fee applies if you spend in an unsupported currency or the matching wallet does not hold enough funds.
Where can I buy foreign currency in New Zealand?
Buy foreign currency online from Travelex, then collect it from a Travelex store, Christchurch Airport, Queenstown Airport or a participating Post Outlet. Check the nearest location, opening hours and available services with our store finder, or view the participating Post Outlet locations.
How much does it cost to buy foreign currency?
Travelex charges 0% commission on online foreign cash orders. Your total cost depends on the exchange rate and any payment or collection fee that applies. Our Price Promise covers eligible online and non-airport store cash transactions. Terms and exclusions apply. Compare the total price and foreign currency amount before you order.
What is the cheapest way to buy foreign currency?
There is no single cheapest option for every foreign currency order. Compare the total amount you will receive after the exchange rate and any payment or collection fees. With Travelex, Bill Payment is surcharge-free, collection from a Travelex store is free and online rates are better than in-store rates. Use our currency converter to compare the amount before you order.
